Exempted Fishing Permits

NOAA Fisheries issued exempted fishing permits (EFPs) to Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, authorizing extended recreational red snapper seasons for eligible participants from October 9 through October 22, 2026.

NOAA Fisheries projects these fish will be harvested within a 14-day period under the EFPs.

Important: EFP project participants may land or possess recreationally harvested red snapper only under their state's EFP, not in addition to the federal recreational season.

  • State pilot testing

    The EFPs let each state pilot test its own data collection and management strategies for recreational red snapper harvest in state and federal waters in 2026.

  • Possible December season

    After reviewing data on the October season and other information, NOAA Fisheries and the states will jointly decide whether a second season may take place in December 2026.

  • Sustainable by design

    NOAA Fisheries aims to work with the states to improve recreational data collection and evaluate state-specific management while keeping catches and discards within sustainable levels.
